Puzzle games that respect your brain (and your battery)

There's a whole genre of puzzle games engineered to keep you tapping without ever really thinking. I'm tired of them. The good ones give you a real problem, let you solve it, and don't beg you to come back with a notification every three hours.

What I look for is a difficulty curve that trusts the player. Early levels teach a mechanic, then later ones combine two or three in a way that makes you pause. Hollow Lantern does this well even though it's technically an adventure — its environmental puzzles never spell out the answer.

Battery is the sleeper issue. A surprising number of puzzle games run heavy animations or background processes that drain your phone fast. The best offline puzzlers are light, which also means they don't heat up your device during a long session.

Try turning off the hint button if a game has one. Half the fun of a good puzzle is being stuck for a minute and then figuring it out yourself. If a game makes that impossible, it's probably not built for people who actually enjoy puzzles.
